Dr. Jessica Young Brown is a licensed clinical psychologist with interests in substance use and abuse, family relationships, religion and spirituality, and general mental health concerns. Dr. Brown completed her undergraduate education at Elon University in Elon, NC. She then matriculated at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA where she received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, both in Counseling Psychology. In addition to her work obligations, Dr. Brown is engaged at the community level. She is the Varina District representative for the Henrico County Board of Mental Health and Developmental Services.
Dr. Brown has strong clinical and research interests in understanding how people use religion and spirituality to make sense of the world, relate to others, and understand themselves. She feels called to act as a bridge between faith communities and the psychological community. She has provided various workshops to church populations on understanding mental health in the church context, women’s issues, and other issues. She was part of the planning team at her home church for a counseling and pastoral care ministry which focuses on providing support and maintaining engagement of members in the ministries of the church. Dr. Brown is passionate about helping people along the process of making life decisions, walking through major transitions, and coping with trying situations. One of her favorite scriptures is found in Psalm 42, verse 1: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul thirsts for you Oh God!”
Dr. Brown is married to Rev. Samuel R. Brown, and has one “bonus kid,” Soumya. In her personal time, Dr. Brown enjoys singing, knitting, and spending time with family and friends.
Dr. Brown is the owner of Choices to Change, LLC, a consultation and educational company focused on on topics of mental health, spirituality, group dynamics, leadership, strategic planning, and other issues.
